My approach to marine art is to create a painting adventure, starting with historical naval events and mixing in creative resourcefulness. The paintings may feature swashbuckling pirates plying the seas for plunder, or they may introduce us to Captain Cook and his crew one moonlit evening, quietly anchored in Canadian waters.
I draw many quick sketches prior to the final design, and I keep my palette of colors small, to help preserve harmony. Plein air painting helps me to stay grounded. I am inspired equally by the wild desert landscapes and profound ocean values of Baja California, as I am by the gray, misty splendor of the British Columbia coastline. Living so close to the Pacific Ocean is a gift, as it would be to any plein air or marine painter.
